Student CSV Upload Troubleshooting Guide
Learn helpful tips to successfully upload your Student CSV
If your Student CSV isn’t uploading, use the checklist below to quickly identify and fix common formatting issues.
Before You Upload
A CSV upload can include up to 100 students. If your file is larger, split it into smaller files before uploading.
Troubleshooting Tips
Try the following steps if your file won’t upload:
1. Split Your File Into Smaller Pieces
Break your CSV into two or three smaller spreadsheets.
- If one file uploads and another doesn’t, you’ll know exactly which rows need attention.
2. Search for Extra Spaces
Use Ctrl + F (or Command + F on Mac) to look for unexpected spaces, especially inside:
- Email addresses
- Student IDs
- Names
Even one extra space can cause an upload error.
3. Look for Duplicate Information
Check for:
- Duplicate student IDs
- Duplicate email addresses
These must be unique.
4. Scan for Missing Information
Scroll through your file slowly and confirm that required fields are complete.
Cells missing names, emails, or IDs can block the entire upload.
5. Change the Font
Switching to a different font can reveal hidden symbols that don’t show up in all fonts.
6. Check Name Formatting
Name formatting rules:
- No periods are allowed in first names
- Periods are allowed in last names
- Apostrophes and hyphens are allowed anywhere
- First Name: Beyoncé
- Last Name: Knowles‑Carter
- First Name: St. (not allowed)
7. Clear Hidden Formatting
Highlight the blank rows under your student list, then right‑click and choose Clear Contents.
This removes stray formatting that can interfere with the upload.
