Last Name and Email When Registering

Learn what happens to last names and emails when you register students under 13

When a student indicates they are under the age of 13 during registration, Everfi follows strict privacy requirements designed to protect young learners. Because of these protections, we do not store full last names or email addresses for students under 13.

Why This Happens

Websites that collect information from children under 13 must follow the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), a federal law that limits the collection of personally identifiable information (PII) from young learners.
To stay compliant, Everfi only collects the minimum amount of information needed for under‑13 students to access their coursework.

For these students:

  • Only the last initial is stored instead of the full last name
  • Email addresses are not stored, even if entered
  • The system maintains an internal flag indicating whether a learner is under or over 13 (instead of storing the actual date of birth)

What This Means for Teachers

We recognize that not having full last names or student emails can make class management more challenging. To help keep students organized, we recommend using their username as the main identifier, especially when multiple students may have similar names.

Everfi remains committed to protecting student privacy and strictly follows both the letter and intent of COPPA.
