Last Name and Email When Registering
Learn what happens to last names and emails when you register students under 13.
The reason we don’t store full last names or email addresses for some K12 students is because it was indicated they were under 13 at the point in which they registered for the course.
Websites collecting information from children under the age of thirteen are required to comply with COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) per order of the Federal Trade Commission ( FTC ). Therefore, we can not store any information considered "Personal Identifiable Information (PII)" if the student is under 13.
We understand this is not ideal for some teachers, but as privacy advocates, we are committed to protecting student data to the letter and intent of the law. We advise using the students' usernames as a differentiator.
