What pre‑assessments measure
Pre-assessments measure a student's knowledge of a topic before beginning course instruction.
These assessments help establish a baseline that can be compared to post-assessment results later in the course to measure knowledge gain.
Pre-assessment scores:
- Are completed before course instruction begins
- Measure what a student already knows about a topic
- Help track learning growth over time
- Do not affect certification status
- Do not determine course completion
Pre-assessment scores are informational and are intended to help teachers better understand student learning.
Where pre‑assessment scores appear
Pre-assessment scores are available on the Student Grade Details page.
Teachers can access Student Grade Details in one of two ways.
Option 1: From My Classes
- Go to My Classes
- Select the class
- Select View Grades
- Select the student whose results you want to view
Option 2: From the Global Gradebook
- Select Gradebook from the navigation menu
- Select the appropriate curriculum
- Use filters such as Class, Certification Status, or School Year to locate the student
- Open the student's grade details
How to view a student’s pre‑assessment score
- Open the student's Grade Details page
- Locate the assessment information
- Review the Pre-Assessment score
Pre-assessment results are displayed separately from any post-assessment results.
Understanding pre‑assessment results
Pre-assessment scores are intended to establish a starting point before instruction begins.
It is common for pre-assessment scores to be lower than post-assessment scores because students have not yet completed the course content.
Teachers can use pre-assessment and post-assessment results together to better understand how student knowledge has changed throughout the course.
Why a pre-assessment score may be missing
A pre-assessment score may not appear if:
- The student has not started the course
- The student did not complete the pre-assessment
- A pre-assessment was not included in or required for that course
Things to keep in mind
- Pre-assessment scores are informational only.
- Pre-assessment scores do not impact certification.
- Course certification is based on course completion requirements, not pre-assessment performance.
- Pre-assessment results are best used as a baseline for measuring knowledge growth.
- Pre-assessment and post-assessment scores are reported separately when available.
If you’re troubleshooting missing or unexpected results, confirm that the student completed the pre‑assessment before starting the course.
